Kotor is in Montenegro, at the inner end of the Bay of Kotor, so this is a cross-border drive from Tirana, Durrës or Golem. The bay is not a fjord but a ria, the drowned valley of the vanished Bokelj river. It runs about 28 km inland, has 107.3 km of shoreline, and lies between two massifs of the Dinaric Alps: Orjen to the west and Lovćen to the east. Its narrowest section is the Verige Strait, 2,300 m long and 340 m wide at the tightest point. The town at the end of it is small. Inside the walls Kotor has about 1,360 inhabitants; with Dobrota and Škaljari the urban area comes to roughly 13,000. The old town is one of the best preserved medieval towns on the Adriatic, built on a triangular piece of ground between the water, the Skurda river and the mountain of St John. The cathedral of Saint Tryphon was built in 1166. Behind the town, 4.5 km of Venetian wall climb the hillside to the castle of San Giovanni, 280 m up. The Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, and in 2017 the fortifications were listed again as part of the Venetian Works of Defence. Montenegro is not in the EU, but the euro has been its legal tender since 2002.
