Albanian Alps

Most of our tours in the north start here. The classic itinerary is the ferry on Komani Lake, a night in Valbona, the pass on foot to Theth and the drive back to Shkodër; day trips reach Theth from Shkodër in two hours.

Guesthouses, not hotels, are the way to stay: family-run, with dinner cooked by the owners.

Questions travelers ask

When can you walk in the Albanian Alps?

June to September for the passes and the high trails. May and October are possible lower down, but the mountain crossings are a summer proposition.

How do you get into the mountains?

Theth is two hours by road from Shkodër. Valbona is reached by the Komani Lake ferry to Fierza and then an hour by road, or the long way round from Shkodër via Puka.

Theth or Valbona — which first?

Theth is the one you can reach and leave by car in a day. Valbona is at least an overnight, and the boat in is half the reason to go.
